Ribbon Biolabs is an emerging leader in synthetic biology, developing innovative and performant methods to generate long, complex DNA molecules that have application in understanding and treating disease.  Headquartered in Vienna, Austria, Ribbon specializes in error-proof, cost-effective DNA synthesis up to 20kb in length, enabling a new generation of biopharmaceutical processes and synthetic biology products.

We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic Bioinformaticist (m/f/d) to join our DNA synthesis team.  The role offers an exciting opportunity for a recent graduate or early-career professional with a background in bioinformatics, computational biology, or related fields.  The ideal candidate will work closely with senior team members to analyze biological data, develop computational tools, and contribute to research and production projects involving DNA synthesis and assembly.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the analysis of biological datasets, with a focus on genomics data and synthetic biology data.
  • Implement bioinformatics algorithms and computational pipelines for processing, analyzing, and interpreting biological data.
  • Perform statistical analyses and data mining techniques to identify patterns, correlations, and biological insights.
  • Develop and maintain bioinformatics software tools and databases for internal use.
  • Collaborate with researchers and scientists to design experiments, analyze results, and provide computational support.
  • Maintain and curate bioinformatics data in support of the training of the in-house developed algorithms.
  • Stay updated with advancements in bioinformatics methodologies, tools, and databases.
  • Contribute to research publications, presentations, and grant proposals.
  • Participate in team meetings, seminars, and workshops to share knowledge and discuss project progress.
  • Document workflows, protocols, and software code for reproducibility and transparency.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Biology, or related field.
  • Strong foundation in bioinformatics concepts, algorithms, and methodologies.
  • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in bioinformatics, such as Python, R, Perl, or Java.
  • Experience with bioinformatics software packages and tools for sequence analysis, genome assembly, and data visualization (e.g., BLAST, Bowtie, SAMtools, RStudio, Bioconductor, Biopython, etc).
  • Experience with development of APIs and web frameworks
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis techniques and software (e.g., R, MATLAB, SPSS, R).
  • Familiarity with the Software Development Life Cycle and associated best practices
  • Knowledge of molecular biology and genetics principles.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize work effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Motivation to learn and adapt to new technologies and methodologies in bioinformatics.
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken), and use of Microsoft Office: Excel/PowerPoint/Word.

Additional plus could be:

  • Experience in analysis of DNA sequencing data from Long Reads technologies (ONT, PacBio)
  • Fluent in German (written and spoken)

By Austrian law, we are obliged to specify the minimum salary level, which ranges from EUR 53000,- to EUR 58000,- gross per year. However, the salary may be adjusted based on your experience and qualifications.

Job type:  Full time (40 h per week).
